Major buildings and development projects fundamentally change the city space, aesthetically and functionally, helping drive a constant urban evolution that reflects a mixture of structure, history and community. This short film explores the impact of one such project – an elevated highway built in the 1970s - through residents at 172 Angélica Avenue, São Paulo’s first modernist building dating to 1927, by architect Júlio de Abreu. The film follows two residents coming and going, contrasting vintage and timeless architectural details throughout the interior in black and white with a full-color panoramic of the present from the balcony. The elevated highway – known simply as the “Elevado” or "Minhocão" – carves a canyon through the foreground. Produced as a student project for a class in 1998, the video was selected to be shown at two national film festivals and one international.
