Toda Nudez Será Castigada, by Nelson Rodrigues
Art Direction, São Paulo, 2000. With Simone Mina

The first phrase of the play comes from a tape recorder played by Herculano, who listens to a recording made by his wife, a former prostitute, before she committed suicide. The tape recording plays a central role in the play, and the idea was to build this sense of circular repetition into the design of the acting space. Action revolves around the a central point as the various lives of Herculano and his wife play out in the past. Actors and audience are close together; chairs are at the circumference of the circle, but also between each acting space. In a setting so intimate, the audience and its reaction become part of the play.
